Families, groups and celebrations
Who can come aboard the Cairns dinner cruise: child and infant rules, supervision on the decks, group bookings and the operator's special cruises.
Book dinner on Trinity Inlet ↗Quick answer
Children aged 4 to 14 pay a child fare, infants aged 0 to 3 are permitted free, and every child must stay under parental supervision. Children cannot use the outer decks without a parent or another adult. Group bookings are for 20 or more people, and the operator runs separate special cruises for occasions.
Child and infant rules
The operator's terms define a child as aged 4 to 14 inclusive and say infants aged 0 to 3 are permitted on board free of charge. Children must be under parental supervision at all times. The operator's FAQ adds that there are no high chairs or changing facilities on board, and that if an infant needs a meal you must book a child fare for it.
The decks
The vessel has large outdoor decks, and they are part of the appeal on an evening cruise. The operator's FAQ says children cannot go onto the outer decks without a parent or another adult. That makes the dining room the place for any child who wants to roam, so choose a seat near the group and agree who is watching whom before the boat leaves the pontoon. A short briefing on the rules, given at the table, is easier than a correction mid-cruise.
Footwear for small feet
Footwear is mandatory for every passenger, and the terms say anyone without shoes or sandals will not be permitted to board. The operator suggests flat rubber-soled shoes for moving around the boat. For children, that means shoes that stay on and a pair that is not slippery on a deck, packed in the bag even if they arrive in flip-flops. Sandals count, so any closed or strapped pair that passes at the gangway will do.
Groups of 20 or more
The operator's terms define a group booking as 20 or more people. Smaller parties of friends or family book through the ordinary calendar, where the options and availability are shown for each date. If your party is larger, ask the operator about group arrangements before you pick a date, because a group booking is handled differently from individual tickets. Naming a lead contact for the party helps when the operator needs to confirm details.
Birthdays and anniversaries
Guests on the booking page mention celebrating a birthday on the cruise, with one describing a wife's 80th birthday that went smoothly. The ticket itself does not list a celebration package, so treat the evening as a shared dinner with a view. Tell the crew about the occasion when you board, and do not expect decorations, a cake or a private table unless the operator has confirmed them to you.
The operator's special cruises
The operator's website describes specialty cruises for special occasions and public holidays. Its special events page lists a Paint, Sip and Lunch Cruise, a Brunch Wellness Cruise and a Christmas Lunch Cruise. Those are separate products with their own bookings, not options on the dinner ticket, so this guide does not describe them in detail. Check the operator's page for current dates, and read each product's own terms before comparing it with the dinner cruise.
Who this isn't for
Families with a child who cannot be supervised closely will find a moving boat with open decks hard work, and the evening has no children's programme. Guests who need a wheelchair-accessible vessel should not book this cruise, because the operator says boarding and the toilets involve several stairs and narrow doorways. For a private celebration with exclusive use of a boat, ask the operator about charters instead.
